A problem intersection in Alexandra, the site of five reported crashes in the past five years, is due for a makeover.
Because of the number of crashes, improvements to the Killarney-Spencer-Bantry-Moa Sts intersection were a high priority, the Vincent Community Board heard recently.
One crash resulted in a serious injury while the other four were non-injury incidents.
Council roading manager Julie Muir said poor visibility appeared to be a contributing factor in the crashes. The intersection was also difficult for pedestrians to negotiate.
The three options for upgrading the site ranged in cost from $11,000 to $205,000, and the proposals ranged from improving the layout of street markings through to fully rebuilding the intersection.
The board recommended an option costing about $90,000.
The proposal included kerb and channel construction within the carriageway to increase the separation between the side roads, and narrowing Killarney St, using street marking.
