Alexis O’Neill (4) showed  fashion is sometimes about attitude  not  clothing at the Cromwell trots at the  weekend.

"I’m the winner, take a picture of me," she said after winning the Miss Cutie section at the Fashion in the Field on Saturday.

She might not have sported a fascinator or sparkly handbag, but in a striped T-shirt and frilled dress the girl twirled and curtsied to spectators before finishing off by blowing a kiss.

Her mother, Jamie O’Neill, formerly of Cromwell, but who now lives in Christchurch, said her daughter knew how to play to the crowd.

"She’s really very outgoing."

Fashion in the Field organiser Bev Mair said Alexis’ attitude won over the audience.

"They were cheering and laughing."

She was one of 25 girls in the section, which did not have a defined age-limit.

Alexis celebrated her win with a soft serve and victory slides down a  grassy bank.

A tug-of-war and car boot picnic competition were among other activities that helped keep families occupied on a cold day with spots of rain.

Southern Harness Racing promoter Lindsay Beer said organisers were "very pleased" to have a crowd of about 3000 people, despite the weather.

"It’s similar to last year, which had grown from previous years.

"There’s a good energy. Everyone was getting involved in the activities and that’s what it’s about.

"It’s very much a family event."
