Grading work on one of the town's oldest houses is getting a $2000 boost, in response to a request for a $6000 contribution.
A report considered yesterday by the Vincent Community Board said Vallance Cottage, built in 1896 by gold-miner William Vallance, needs $12,000 worth of work to fix the floor and weatherproof its exterior.
Half that sum was sought from the board, with the balance to come from community funding groups.
The report, by Central Otago District Council property and facilities officer Tara Bates, said Central Lakes Trust had advised that the council, as the building owner, would be expected to fund at least half of the repairs. Community board members supported the project, but felt $6000 was too much to give.
Council corporate services manager Susan Finlay said money might have to be trimmed from other things or Vincent ward residents could be facing another rates increase, as money had already been budgeted for the coming year.
"Any time you are considering signing off on something like this you need to consider what else you can give up to save the money."
Board member Graeme Bell said: "I don't think we have an option but to do something about it". He suggested providing the lower amount, with any balance having to be raised through community funding.
The cottage was closed to the public in 2009 due to the condition of the floor.
