Drunk and violent patrons forced the early closure of two Central Otago hotels over the weekend and both incidents will be referred to the licensing authorities.

Police closed down the Criterion Club Hotel in Alexandra on Friday about 10pm, and at 1am on Sunday, police were called to the Bannockburn Hotel.

That bar manager decided to close the establishment.

On Friday night the police were called to a serious assault in the Criterion Club Hotel bar, and Sergeant Dave Greaves, of Alexandra said the decision was taken to close the bar down "given the level of violence and the intoxication of the bar patrons".

An 18-year-old Alexandra woman was admitted to Dunedin Hospital with injuries to her face, after allegedly being hit with a big beer bottle.

A 47-year-old Alexandra woman will appear in the Alexandra District Court tomorrow in connection with the incident, to face charges of injuring with intent to injure, and fighting.

Sgt Greaves said investigations were continuing and further charges were likely to be laid.

The women knew each other and both had been drinking.

When the police arrived at the hotel and began dealing with the women, who had moved to the footpath outside but were still "struggling with each other," another scuffle could be heard in the garden bar, he said.

That scuffle was over before the police could intervene.

Information about the incident would be referred to the Liquor Licensing Authority.

At 1am on Saturday, three Alexandra police were called to back up two Cromwell police after reports of "disorder and fighting" at the Bannockburn Hotel, Sgt Greaves said.

No arrests were made by police at the hotel but there was concern about the number of intoxicated patrons in the bar.

"The bar manager acknowledged that and he chose to close the bar," he said.

The liquor licensing officer in Cromwell would be following up the matter with the bar manager this week.

Despite two incidents of that nature in one weekend, Sgt Greaves did not believe there was a pattern of such cases in Central Otago.

"It's more isolated incidents ... I don't believe there's a pattern but, on occasion, it happens. It's all about the bar managers managing their patrons, not letting the patrons manage the bar."
