150th deadline nears

Groups hoping for a slice of the $200,000 funding for 2012 celebrations around the 150th anniversary of gold discovery in Central Otago have only 13 weeks left to put their case.

While many entities such as museums and Arrowtown had already applied for Gold 150 Central Lakes Trust funding, co-ordinator Julie Hughes said many more needed to get in fast.

Ms Hughes called for parties such as historical groups, scout brigades, school PTAs and other community groups to apply before the October 31 cut-off point.

"From St Bathans, Omakau, Glenorchy and Nevis, through to Roxburgh and Makarora - in all of these places, we want people to get behind it and take part in the Gold 150 celebrations.

"It's not that often that we get offered a big pool of money to get rid of ... and it's a great opportunity for the region."

Application forms and free event advice around the celebrations can be obtained by contacting Ms Hughes on the celebrations' dedicated website, gold150.org.nz
