Two field days advising how to identify signs of wallabies and where to report them are being held in Ranfurly and Tarras next week.
The field days, being hosted by the Otago Regional Council (ORC), are called "Protect your country from wallaby invaders". Already present in large numbers in South Canterbury, wallabies represented a major strategic threat to Otago farming and the environment, ORC chairman Stephen Woodhead said.
Several reported wallaby deaths and sightings had been investigated, including a dead animal found east of Duntroon which appeared to have been shot and dumped on the side of the road; another wallaby sighting in North Otago; and two wallabies shot in the Maniototo within seven months.
The ORC is encouraging anyone who has seen wallabies or wallaby sign to report it to the ORC.
The field days will be held at the Ranfurly Hotel on Monday from 11am to 1pm and the Tarras Community Hall on Tuesday from 11am to 1pm.
