A Teviot Valley garage sale had the most vendors in its history and has been hailed a success by its organiser.

The annual Teviot Valley Garage Sale Trail was on Saturday and 71 vendors entered and were visited by over 1000 people.

Much of the proceeds from the sale went to the Teviot Valley Kids Count Fund to help families in the area who need financial assistance.

Organiser Shirley Marsden said the sale showed the community spirit of the valley.

"[It’s] the best one we’ve ever had."

Teviot Valley residents have garage sales at their properties or halls and people buy a map to drive round the valley to hunt down a bargain. Those having a garage sale paid $25 to be on the map and kept the proceeds from their sales.

There were a lot of "generous" donations, some people giving upwards of $100, she said.

About 400 cars travelled from Millers Flat to Roxburgh to visit the garage sales, which had knick-knacks and other items on offer.

"We’ve had so much good, positive feedback. And considering it was pouring with rain at times and cold, but it didn’t hinder anyone going round."

The sale was first held 11 years ago and many people had attended each year, she said.

"I really want to thank my Teviot Valley Kids Count Committee for all that they’ve done to help. They’ve been amazing. There’s only four of us and so they do a fabulous job."

A final fundraising total was not yet available.
