Serving their community and their passions has resulted in three South Canterbury men being recognised with Queen's Birthday Honours.

Thomas Henderson (70) is a Pleasant Point farmer who was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

He made a significant difference to the sustainability of the environment and the economy in Canterbury when he was instrumental in the development and completion of the Opuha water storage dam, over 27 years.

He continues to advocate for other water storage projects throughout New Zealand.

John Hargraves (67), of Timaru, is considered an authority on the restoration of historic pipe organs and was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his 45-year involvement in the field of organ building and restoration in New Zealand.

He is the chairman of the South Island Organ Company, after joining in 1968, and has played a significant part in building, rebuilding and restoring more than 150 organs throughout the country.

Leslie Howard (81) has been a police volunteer in Timaru for the past 14 years and was awarded a Queen's Service Medal for serving the community in several capacities.

He was the union official at Smithfield Freezing Works, from where he retired in 1992; is a life member of the Kia Toa Indoor Bowls Club and helped establish SeniorNet in Timaru.

Creating practical solutions to the issues faced by senior citizens continues to be a focal point for him as the national president of Grey Power.
