Project costs compounding

The initial effects of interest on the council's $91.4 million grant for the stadium are made clear in a report on new company Otago Venues Ltd, with interest increasing the amount to $103 million.

Asked why the council would be buying $103 million of shares in the company set up to own and run the stadium, when the council's input into the stadium was supposed to be $91.4 million, Cr Brown said it came from capitalisation of interest during the building stage.

Instead of paying interest in the first two years, interest would be added to capital.

Council managers confirmed last year interest on the city council's possible allocation of up to $91.4 million could hit $92 million, meaning a total cost to the city of up to $183.4 million.
