Liquor store owner shooting 'accidental': lawyer

The man who shot dead south Auckland liquor store owner Navtej Singh in a 2008 robbery did not realise the gun was loaded and did not mean to pull the trigger, his lawyer said today.

Anitelea Chan-Kee was "horrified by his behaviour and the terrible consequences", Jonathan Down told the jury in the High Court at Auckland.

The prosecution have claimed that Chan-Lee lined up Mr Singh and shot him in the stomach. He died the next day.

Chan-Kee, 22, Tino Faamele Felise, 19, Eti Filoa, 25, Walter McCarthy, 19, Myron Robert Felise, 22, and Jason Naseri, 21 are on trial for murdering Mr Singh, and the aggravated robbery of the store.

A seventh man, Mefiposeta Chan-Kee, 26, is charged with being an accessory after the killing. Mr Down, summing up the defence for Anitelea Chan-Kee, said he accepted his unlawful actions led to a man's death. The only decision the jury had to make was whether Chan-Kee was guilty of murder or manslaughter.

The trial is continuing.
