Honours to duathlon newcomer

A first-timer and a regular competitor took top honours in the men's and women's individual sections of the Jimmy's Duathlon on Saturday.

The fastest individual time for the 36km cycle and 9km run duathlon was posted by Dunedin veteran athlete Kevin Duggan (46) in his first attempt at the event.

He finished in 1hr 36min 48sec.

Roxburgh athlete Tracey Pringle (36) won the open women's section.

The Roxburgh event attracted 47 entries, with a further 15 in the newly introduced fun run section and 12 in the walk.

Duggan said he had always thought about entering the event and decided this was the year.

"It all went pretty good. I had a tail wind to the [Millers Flat] bridge and then a bit of a tail wind and a good wee run with a few ups and downs. I took a wrong turn somewhere, so added a bit to the distance."

Duggan is in training for the New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin later this month.

Pringle is a regular winner on her "home ground".

She has entered the Jimmy's event for many years, except for last year when she was in hospital with a prolapsed disc while pregnant.
