Queenstown's second set of traffic lights will become operational today, New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) project manager John Jarvis said yesterday.
The resort's only set of traffic lights is established either side of the single-lane Kawarau Bridge on State Highway 6.
The second set of lights, funded by the NZTA, will also be operating on State Highway 6, between McBride and Humphrey Sts in Frankton.
Mr Jarvis said the installation of the $90,000 pedestrian traffic signals was part of safety improvement work being done by the agency to cater for the new Remarkables School, which was due to open in February.
"The new signals will enable school children and general pedestrians to safely cross what is a busy section of State Highway 6," Mr Jarvis said.
Work on widening and improving safety at the McBride St intersection, which cost about $70,000, was expected to be completed later next week.
