State Highway 1 between Taupo and Turangi was closed today after cardboard on the back of a truck and trailer unit caught fire.
The cardboard on the trailer caught fire about 3.30am at Bulli Point, a bay on the lakeside, Fire Service northern communications spokeswoman Megan Ruru said.
"Because of the cardboard it's quite a deep-seated fire," she told NZPA.
"We've still got three crews out there and they are trying to turn the cardboard over."
Southbound traffic was being diverted through Poihipi Road near Taupo onto SH32, while drivers travelling north were being directed onto SH41 at Turangi.
