Dunedin church to receive marble altar from chapel at Teschemakers

The marble altar from the chapel at Teschemakers is heading to the Holy Name Church in Dunedin, according to a Catholic parish newsletter.

In the newsletter dated October 18, the parish said the pastoral area had received a "generous gift" from the Dominican Sisters - the marble altar, marble stands and choir stalls - from the chapel at Teschemakers.

There was also the cost of installation and transportation involved, so donations were needed from parishioners.

Yesterday, it was reported that an application to the Waitaki District Council had been made for land-use resource consent to remove five stained-glass windows from the historic chapel, in the grounds of the former Catholic boarding school.

The removal of the windows was officially approved by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, as an affected party.

Carol Berry, who is chairwoman of the North Otago branch of the Historic Places Trust, has made a submission to the council, saying the application for the removal of items was a matter of "considerable importance" to the built heritage and cultural values of the North Otago community.

It was important that the public interest in the issue be heard, and she requested the application be publicly notified so all surrounding concerns and issues could be considered by the council.

"In particular, it is possible that a voluntary covenant may be able to be arranged to provide for both the retention and proper maintenance and preservation of these items in situ," Mrs Berry said.

It was therefore essential there was an opportunity for input by interested parties to the planning process and outcomes, she said.
