Dunedin's resident naval officer is leaving for the bright lights of Wellington and a senior defence force job.

Lieutenant-commander Phil Bradshaw begins his new job as the director of defence communications at the Defence Force Wellington headquarters on December 14.

The Dunedin residential naval officer position is being advertised internally within the navy.

After four spent years in Dunedin, Lt-cmdr Bradshaw said the move was "bittersweet" for him, his wife Joanne and their two daughters.

While the new position was his "dream job" and he and his family were very excited about the move, they also were sad to be leaving Dunedin where they had come to know many people and been involved deeply in the community through his job.

The family would finally relocate to Wellington in March.

Lt-cmdr Bradshaw will replace Dunedin man Commander Sean Fogarty, who will become the director of the NZDF Staff College.
