One of the oldest Golden Oldie netball teams was reunited in Queenstown at the weekend after more than 20 years.

The United team, with members from Otago and Southland, including the coach of Southern Steel, Robin Broughton, attended the first Golden Oldies World Netball Festival in Auckland in 1984.

The team also went to the festival in Brisbane in 1988 but the players have never all been together since.

Queenstown woman Jenny Mason said the team had been talking about a reunion for many years.

This year, with the festival being held in Queenstown, she said it was a good opportunity to get the players together again.

Eight of the team members spent the weekend in Queenstown at Mrs Mason's Amokura Lodge.

They attended the Golden Oldies New Zealand v Barbarians game on Friday night.

"We had a good catch-up. The photos came out, then came the laughs and the stories," she said.

The 1988 team was: Heather Thompson, of Invercargill, Robin Broughton, of Invercargill, Elaine Murdoch, of Invercargill, Yvonne Darling, of Dunedin, Margaret Holden, of Invercargill.

Nancy Buchanan, of Invercargill, Elizabeth Rowley, of Coromandel, Jenny Mason, of Queenstown, and Elva Simpson, of Dunedin.

All of the netball players had represented Otago, Southland, Canterbury or Hutt at regional level.

Mrs Simpson and Mrs Rowley had also played for the Silver Ferns, in 1963 and 1967 respectively.
