Overcast conditions did not dampen the spirits of 130 orienteers and multisporters taking part in the Cardrona rogaine on Saturday.

The event was the second annual rogaine to be organised by Ed and Carol Stevens of Wanaka and a third event being planned for November.

Two events were held: one starting at 9am for those wanting to complete a 12-hour challenge and the other starting at 1pm, providing a six-hour outing.

Rogaines combine walking or running disciplines with map and compass-reading skills.

The aim is to correctly navigate your team to as many controls as possible, collecting points as you go.

"Everybody was very, very happy with it.

It was an awesome event.

"The snow [earlier in the week] did play a wee part in the higher ground.

One of the controls did end up under snow and I didn't get time to shift it.

But I was able to get the rest of the course reset to lower ground," Mr Stevens said yesterday.

The numbers were building all the time, he said.

Top multisporters Mike Tubbs and Hamish Morton won the six-hour event, followed by Rob Ormanby, Chris Booth and Jim Thompson in second place and Rob Harrow, Mark Mineman and Joanna Forbes home third..

In the 12-hour rogaine, Daniel Johnson and Ake Fagerang were first and Katharine Eustace, Blair Coupe and Mike Plimmer were second.
