Nearly 100 angel investors are attending the Angel Association's second conference in Queenstown this week.
Association chairman Andy Hamilton said the conference began on Thursday at the Crowne Plaza and had attracted international investors from Australia, Israel, Singapore and the United States.
"Investors at the conference are focused on investing in early stage enterprises, start-up companies trying to go global," he said.
Angel investors typically invest their own funds in start-ups.
International investors were showing interest in investing in New Zealand companies.
"They see some interesting companies here and having those partners in those markets adds value to New Zealand start-up businesses," he said.
Upstart Angel groups had been established in Dunedin and Queenstown for the past two years.
Guest speakers at the conference included Sir Stephen Tindall, of The Warehouse, Dunedin businessman Sir Eion Edgar and Alan McConnan, of Mainland.
Sir Stephen received an industry arch-angel award for his $150 million investment in New Zealand companies, Mr Hamilton said.
The conference continues today with a presentation from Bridget Liddell, board member of New Zealand Superannuation Fund.
Mr Hamilton said the angel industry had been operating for about five years in New Zealand.
The Angel Association was established in 2008 to bring together business angel networks and early stage funds.
