Lawrence's annual country fair day turned 21 yesterday, with organisers saying changing the event to a Sunday was the best possible present.

Hundreds of people converged on the historic town's main street for an event that has gained a reputation for offering a relaxed atmosphere, well-equipped stalls and plenty of fun for all ages.

More than 50 stalls lined both sides of the street.

There was everything from jewellery and children's toys to glassware and baking for sale.

Stallholders said they enjoyed coming back to Lawrence every year because there was always a good crowd looking to buy early Christmas presents.

Event spokeswoman Elsie Thompson said the gathering was usually held on the first Saturday in November but demand from stallholders for a Sunday date prompted the change and it appeared to be a winning formula.

"We are very, very pleased with the change," she said.
