Cricket: Pitch played well but not our call, Hesson says

Otago coach Mike Hesson gave the Molyneux Park pitch a pass mark but stopped short of endorsing the popular cricket ground.

The venue lost its New Zealand Cricket (NZC) warrant of fitness last season after the pitch was deemed substandard.

However, it has been allocated two one-day matches in the expectation it will come up to scratch.

Otago yesterday completed a three-day trial at the ground and Hesson told the Otago Daily Times the pitch performed well.

"For this time of year and for a trial game, it served the purpose very well," Hesson said.

But when asked if he would be happy for Otago to play the two one-day fixtures scheduled for the ground, Hesson responded: "We love playing on Molyneux Park but ultimately, it is not our call."

NZC turf manager Jared Carter was at the venue and will liaise with both captains and the umpires before compiling a report.

A decision is expected within the next day or two.

Hesson was disappointed poor weather ruined day two of the three-day match but said it helped set up an interesting battle.

The Cumming XI declared on 285/7 on Sunday, but only nine overs were possible on Monday, prompting the McSkimming XI to declare at 60/1.

The Cumming XI returned the favour, declaring at 57/2 yesterday to set the McSkimming XI a target of 283 from a minimum of 80 overs.

The skipper, Otago medium pacer Warren McSkimming, helped steer his side to victory with 68 as his team overhauled the total with two wickets in hand and 20 overs remaining.

Hamish Rutherford also impressed with the bat, scoring 54 and Nick Cape chipped in 37.

"Warren McSkimming and Hamish Rutherford were the standouts [yesterday], but we saw enough good things from the likes of Leighton Morgan, who showed he was able to bat some time, and Brendan Domigan and Sam Wells put together a very good partnership.

"There was enough people put their hands up for it to make it quite difficult for us to pick our side against Canterbury."

Otago plays Canterbury in a four-day warm-up match at University Oval No 2 ground from November 2-5.

The Otago selectors will probably name two separate sides for the match, with each team playing two of the four days.

Those teams are expected to be named tonight.

Fast bowler James McMillan has a hamstring strain and may miss the warm-up match and top order batsman Greg Todd has a groin strain and is also in doubt.
