All proceeds from "Wine Cave Tours" at Gibbston Valley Wines at Labour Weekend will go to the Samoa Tsunami Relief Fund.

Gibbston Valley Wines marketing director Ian Mill said visitors to the winery on October 24 and 25 would be able to take a 30-minute tour of the winery, vineyard and wine cave, in exchange for a gold coin donation to the tsunami appeal.

"This will give members of the Wakatipu community and visitors to the area an opportunity to contribute to the tsunami relief fund, while enjoying a guided tour of our winery and New Zealand's largest underground wine cave," Mr Mill said.

The wine cave was built in 1995 as a maturation facility for the company's barrels of pinot noir wine.

Almost 400 barrels of pinot noir from the 2009 harvest are stored in the cave, which extends 60m into the hillside behind the Gibbston valley winery.

The wine cave provides the perfect environment for maturing pinot noir in barrels.

It has a constant natural temperature of 14degC and humidity of almost 70%.

After fermentation is completed in stainless steel tanks, pinot noir typically spends about 10 months in French oak barrels before being bottled.

Mr Mill said about 30,000 people took part in Wine Cave Tours each year, learning about the history and the success of wine-making in Central Otago, visiting the vineyard, learning about the wine-making process, and enjoying a tasting of three wines in the cave.

Gibbston Valley Wines would also be holding a "Spring Clean Wine Sale" to make room for its new release wines.

Remaining stocks of several vintages of its library stock would be offered at reduced prices, including some rare gold medal 2008 Pinot Noir.

Free tasting of its yet-to-be-released wines from the latest vintages, including the gold medal 2008 Pinot Noir, would be available between 11am and 2pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Gibbston Valley would also be hosting the award-winning Sydney-based Di Bird Trio on September 25 from 3pm to 5pm, part of the 2009 ASB JazzFest, Mr Mill said.

The company would also be launching its new summer menu at Labour Weekend.
