604 submissions on plan changes

Arrowtown residents have made more than 600 submissions on proposed plan changes relating to the town's urban growth boundary.

The submissions on the Queenstown Lakes District Council's proposed Plan Change 29 were handed to the council on Friday afternoon on behalf of Arrowtown residents.

Residents Jude Gillies and Peter Roberts presented QLDC communications manager Meaghan Miller with 604 submissions - 591 of those in support of the council's proposed boundary.

However, it was expected the total number of submissions would grow again today, when forms which had been posted to the council arrived.

Ms Miller said the record number of submissions received was on the 10-Year Plan, when the council received 1400 submissions, "but for a plan change, 600 is quite high".

"I'm really delighted to see that the community has really got involved in the process and that's what it's all about," she said.

Ms Gillies said she and Mr Roberts were presenting the submissions on behalf of their "shining light", Mia Bennie, who had been the driving force behind the community involvement.

Mrs Bennie was unable to deliver the submissions due to work commitments in Christchurch.

Mr Roberts said delivering the submissions to the council was just the beginning.

"We all know we have to gear up again because the hearing is very important too."

Ms Miller said the next step was to compile the submissions into a summary which would then be notified, allowing all original submitters to look at other people's points and make further submissions.

"We would like to be in a position to notify the summary of submissions in November," Ms Miller said.

"Once the further submission period has ended then the hearing will be scheduled.

"This is likely to be in the New Year, preferably in Arrowtown."
