Planning blight hits value

The poor state of some properties along Dunedin's southern entrance has caused comment over the many years improvements to the Southern Motorway have been discussed.

New Zealand Transport Agency regional director Bruce Richards this week used the term "planning blight".

The Collins English Dictionary defines planning blight as "the harmful effects of uncertainty about . . . future development in a particular area on the quality of life of its inhabitants and the normal growth of its business and community enterprises".

A February Dunedin City Council planning report, about Mosgiel arterial routes, used the term, saying "long-standing designations that are not implemented" can cause planning blight and subsequent devaluation of properties that are affected.
