New bylaws have given the Queenstown Airport Corporation more power to punish parking infringements.

Corporation chief executive Steve Sanderson said the bylaws provided a wide range of rules for the use of Queenstown Airport.

The bylaws also allow the airport to enforce compliance with its traffic and parking signs by issuing infringement notices.

"The airport will have the option of issuing parking tickets to motorists who fail to comply with parking and traffic signs. To date, the airport has not issued infringement notices, and frankly, this would be our preference. Unfortunately, some people take advantage of our pick-up and drop-off areas, and in some cases our reserved disability parks," he said.

The bylaws cover all users of the terminal, roads, parking areas, gates and aprons.

They also outline the airport's responsibilities for lost and abandoned property, commercial photography and filming on airport property.

Mr Sanderson said the bylaws allowed airport users to see the rules in one concise and comprehensive document.

The new bylaws come into effect on September 24.
