A 21-year-old man is dead and his 19-year-old passenger critically injured after a crash at Rotoiti, 35km east of Rotorua, early this morning.
Senior Sergeant Denton Grimes said the crash happened about 1.10am when the driver lost control on a bend. The car rolled several times and the occupants were thrown out.
"Police are continuing their investigation as to the cause of the crash but early indications suggest alcohol, speed and failing to wear seatbelts are contributing factors," he said.
The passenger was in a critical condition in Rotorua Hospital.
Next of kin were yet to be advised.
