Among them was James McMillan, a residential assistant at the University of Otago's Cumberland College.
He gathered two others from the hall and five student friends and had a "really good" day raising money around the campus for the society.
"It's been amazing how generous people have been. We have probably made $100 an hour," he said.
Otago Cancer Society chief executive officer Wendy Houliston said the day had been "stunning" and she and volunteers had been "blown away" by people's support.
Takings appeared to be on a par, if not better, than last year with a final figure expected later next week.
