Ex-broadcaster to stand trial on drug charges

A former high profile TV and radio broadcaster is to stand trial for manufacturing methamphetamine.

At North Shore District Court yesterday Judge Barbara Morris committed Peter Verschaffelt to the High Court in Auckland.

He will appear for a call-over on September 30.

He is accused of manufacturing methamphetamine and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He was arrested in October 2006 following a police search of a motel room in Orewa, north of Auckland.

Police were called after the motel manager detected strong chemical smells coming from the unit.

Several items were found at the motel unit from which a subsequent forensic analysis later detected methamphetamine.

The charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice was laid while Verschaffelt was working for the Housing Corporation.

He is alleged to have threatened a woman that her partner's father would be kicked out of a state house if she did not tell police Verschaffelt was giving the couple counselling.
