Deputy dean aids crash victim

A man who suffered head injuries when his vehicle rolled near Middlemarch yesterday afternoon received expert care from the deputy dean of the Dunedin School of Medicine.

The 50-year-old man and two 50-year-old women were flown to Dunedin Hospital by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter following the crash, which happened on a bend on the Hyde to Middlemarch Rd, at Taieri Lake Station, about 3.30pm.

The man received moderate to serious injuries, and the women had minor to moderate injuries, a St John ambulance spokesman said.

University of Otago Associate Prof Jim Reid - a Dunedin GP and deputy dean of the Dunedin School of Medicine - told the Otago Daily Times he stopped to help after coming across the crash scene while returning home from Wanaka.

He found a four-wheel-drive vehicle upside down, having rolled on a bend in the road, and helped the male occupant.

"He had a head injury. I just stopped the bleeding and that sort of thing," Prof Reid said.

The man was later tended by a nurse and St John ambulance staff before being flown to hospital.
