The first of five new retailers expected to open outlets in an expanded Golden Centre mall in Dunedin has been confirmed by the general manager of the mall, Simon Eddy.

Baby and children's clothing retailer T&T Childrenswear is scheduled to open a store in the mall on November 1.

The redeveloped mall will officially be relaunched on November 6, Mr Eddy said.

It would be the first time in 17 years the company had operated a shop in Dunedin, T&T managing director Darrin Johannink said.

Three more retailers to open outlets in the mall were expected to be named once contracts were finalised.

There was also space for one more retailer, Mr Eddy said.

However, less certain was the opening date for the walkway linking the Golden Centre with the neighbouring $34 million Wall Street mall developed by the Dunedin City Council.

Council staff had expected the walkway to open in March, when Wall Street was launched, helping draw customers into the ratepayer-funded development.

Yesterday, Mr Eddy said it was now hoped the walkway linking the two would be open in "four to six weeks".

However, shop frontages in the area around the walkway's Golden Centre end would need to be completed first, and it was possible the date could slip further still, he said.

"We will endeavour to open the link as early as possible prior to that opening.

"Whether that's next week or next month is an operational issue," he said.

Council staff had expected the walkway to be open in time for Wall Street's glitzy opening ceremony in March, and some retailers spoken to had blamed the walkway's continued closure for slower-than-expected sales.

However, Mr Eddy has said the agreement with council staff was only to open the walkway as soon as possible.

In May, he indicated the walkway would be open in July or August.

Elsewhere, the $5 million Golden Centre redevelopment was "70% through" and ahead of schedule.

Once completed, it would include a new raised roof and a glass atrium meeting place.
