Wanaka triathlete Merryn Greenwood finished second in the Frauenfeld Triathlon in Switzerland yesterday in 1hr 47min 39sec, 2min behind winner Michaela Giger, of Zurich.

Greenwood said yesterday she was pleased with the start to her European build-up for the Challenge Roth long-distance triathlon in July.

The Frauenfeld Triathlon is a women's only event of 800m swim (pool), 20km bike and 5.6km run.

Greenwood was seeded to start second-last and had to chase the field the whole way.

"The bike leg was tough. It included two fairly hefty climbs within a two-lap course, so it suited me down to the ground. I was glad for all the Crown Range hill climbing I've been doing before I left. This is where I caught up several places and my bike time was the second-fastest in the women's field," Greenwood said.

Greenwood always looks forward to the run and was able to turn out the fastest women's split.

"I am very pleased with how the race itself went for me and feel that the work that coach Val Burke has been giving me is paying dividend. I hope to be able to keep this up," Greenwood said.
