The primary and intermediate pupils were competing in the five-hour Otago School Teams Chess Championship, which was held at Otago Boys High School Director of play Quentin Johnson said it was a Swiss-style tournament, in which similarly ranked teams played each other.
The event was run differently this year, with the competition taking place in single afternoon rather than throughout a school term.
Mr Johnson was pleased with the turnout, which was similar to that seen in previous years.
The overall winner received a trophy, and the top team in each section received a cash prize for their school.
