Man crashes through airport fence - twice

Police in Roxburgh are investigating after a young male driver crashed through a fence twice before wrapping his vehicle around a pine tree.

Constable Jape Wanoa, of Roxburgh, said a youth from Roxburgh was driving along Roxburgh East Rd near the racecourse about 5pm on Friday, when his car left the road and crashed through a fence at Roxburgh Airport.

He drove along the airstrip for about 100m before turning back towards the road and again crashing through the fence.

"He obviously panicked . . . When he got back on to the road, he crashed into a pine tree. He had minor injuries but the car was written off," Const Wanoa said.

No charges have been laid in relation to the incident although police inquiries were continuing.

Embers from an open fire burnt a hole in the floor of a Millers Flat house early on Friday.

People were asleep in the house when the fire occurred about 6am, although no-one was injured.

The Millers Flat Volunteer Fire Brigade put out the small fire.

A vehicle was abandoned by its occupants on the Lindis Pass near Tarras after leaving SH8 on Saturday night.

Luggate Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Rod Anderson said it appeared the driver lost control on ice and the vehicle rolled off the road.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 7pm by a person who had seen the car on the side of the road, although by the time they arrived no occupants could be found.

Mr Anderson said it appeared the occupants were from Cromwell and had made it back to the town after the crash.

"Which would indicate they were not seriously injured," Mr Anderson said.

The Cromwell Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a house on Neplusultra St in Cromwell early on Saturday after an overheated pot on a stove filled the property with smoke and steam.

Chief fire officer Steve Shaw said there was no actual fire and damage was minimal.
