Man in court over student swing death

A man charged with manslaughter over the bridge-swinging death of Massey University student Catherine Peters appeared in Palmerston North District Court this afternoon.

Ms Peters, 18, died on March 7 when she fell 20 metres on to the riverbed beneath the Ballance Bridge in the Manawatu Gorge.

She was in a group from the university's alpine club on an introductory rope swing run by Palmerston North-based Crag Adventures.

All details of the accused man's identity, including his age, were suppressed today.

He was released on bail to reappear at Palmerston North Court on March 25.

Inquiry head Detective Sergeant Allan Mullacrane said earlier today the manslaughter charge resulted from the police investigation into safety procedures.

He would make no further comment as the matter was now before the courts.

Police had seized equipment used on the day, carried out a scene examination, consulted experts, and took statements from more than 30 witnesses.

Police said the Department of Labour was also compiling its own report and would send its findings to the coroner.
