Mountain biking: Williams triumphs at the Mavora Lakes

Mark Williams, of Queenstown, won the inaugural two-stage mountain-bike race at the Mavora Lakes last weekend.

Both stages of the event were based at the lakes and each day could be raced as a single event or as a two-stage race.

Williams won the 95km Mavora Max-out first stage from a field of 34 athletes in 6hr 17min 39sec, with 25 riders failing to finish.

He was second in the 110km Bike Wakatipu race in 4hr 11min 55sec, just over 2min behind winner Dave Sullivan, of Christchurch, who only raced the second stage.

That stage attracted 69 athletes.

Williams' combined time of 10hr 29min 34sec put him in front of Tony Hogg, of Dunedin (10hr 34min 37sec), and third-placed Geof Blance, of Alexandra (10hr 49min 44sec).

New Zealand representative Marcus Roy, of Dunedin, was fourth in the two-day event, just under 2min behind Blance.

The women's races were won by Rae-Anne Kurucz (stage one, 9hr 48min 44sec) and Sara Macdonald (stage two, 4hr 51min 52sec).
