A recreation centre in Balclutha was a similar example of community collaboration to the proposed Mosgiel pool, the Taieri Community Facilities Trust chairwoman told a meeting last week.
"It's pretty much a similar model to what we're going to do with the pool,'' Irene Mosley told the Mosgiel Resource Group meeting.
The Balclutha project was the result of collaboration between the Clutha District Council and the local community, she said.
"In that case, the council said two and a-half million dollars tops, the community can find the rest, and we did.''
The Cross Recreation Centre in Balclutha, which opened in November 2011, was now used by 80,000 people a year, she said.
The Taieri Community Facilities Trust has committed to raising $7.5million towards the construction of the pool, which would be added to a $60million placeholder amount the council has committed in the 2018-19 financial year.
The trust was working towards finalising a suitable site before starting fundraising, Mrs Mosley said.
"The places we can put it are pretty limited and we've got to be aware of people's needs as well.''
Mrs Mosley said after the meeting that the site of the existing pool, on Gordon Rd, was not appropriate because of demolition and rebuilding time.
"The community, potentially, could miss two summers so that's one reason to not use that site.''
The site was also not appropriate due to changes in regional council bylaws, Mrs Mosley said.
It was essential that the pool complex had four pools including a "learn-to-swim pool'' which would serve as a profit base for the complex, she said.
A contracting company was prepared to draw up initial plans for the project once a site was confirmed, Mrs Mosley said.
