Nominations open; second councillor to not seek re-election

A second Waitaki district councillor has confirmed she will not stand for re-election in October.

Oamaru ward councillor Sally Hope said she would step away from the council after her second term.

Nominations for candidates open today.

In October last year, Cr Hope told the Otago Daily Times she planned to seek a third term, but on Wednesday she confirmed she would not seek re-election.

Cr Hope was unavailable for further comment yesterday.

First-term Ahuriri ward councillor Dr June Slee said in May she would not be seeking re-election, saying as a 70-year-old she had to prioritise travel and working on a book, which she spent 10 weeks researching in Tasmania prior to taking her role as a councillor through an uncontested by-election.

Former Ahuriri ward councillor Craig Dawson has confirmed he will put his name forward for the lone Ahuriri seat.

Mr Dawson stepped down in 2013 after one term.

At the time he said it was difficult to juggle his workday life with the responsibilities of being a councillor, and he cited unfair compensation for travel expenses for councillors.

In the Oamaru ward, the Waitaki Community Gardens co-ordinator Sophia Leon de la Barra announced she intended to run for council last October.

Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher has also confirmed he will again seek the mayoral seat.

Oamaru ward councillors Melanie Tavendale, Peter Garvan, Hugh Perkins, Jim Hopkins and Colin Wollstein have all confirmed they will run this year.

Corriedale ward councillors Bill Kingan and Guy Percival have indicated they will seek re-election.

In October last year, Kathy Dennison told the Otago Daily Times she had not made a decision as to whether she would be seeking re-election. She could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Nominations for candidates close on August 12.
