Basketball: Ajax leads, despite default

Ajax has held on to its spot at the top of the Dunedin women's A grade competition despite being forced to default on Tuesday night.

With its Goldrush players unavailable because of representative duties, Ajax could not put a team together and defaulted to Ajax 2.

Varsity A has joined Ajax on 11 points following a 75-52 win against the Falcons. While the teams are tied on points, Ajax beat Varsity in the match between the two teams so claims pole position.

Varsity's win was built on an impressive opening half. It powered away to lead the Falcons 46-20.

The Falcons rallied, outscoring their opponent 33-29 in the final two quarters. Carly McMillan top-scored for the Falcons with 11 points, while Racyne Parker (16 points) and Vanessa Simpson (13 points) led the way for Varsity.

Magic A lifted its points total to 10 to close the gap to Ajax and Varsity A with a 62-56 win against Varsity B.

The game was tightly contested throughout, but guard Giana Leoni drilled five three-points in a 17-point haul. Her outside shooting game proved the difference, although Caitlin Glue registered a game-high 20 points for Varsity B.
