Angus Mackay and Wendy Harrex spoke during the public forum at yesterday's council meeting where they both bemoaned a lack of progress on the idea of building a bridge linking Queens Gardens and the harbourside.
Mr Mackay said building such a bridge would benefit the city in a multitude of ways, including by encouraging development in the area and opening up a ‘‘fairly congested'' area to the fresh air and fabulous views of the harbour.
He questioned the argument that Dunedin was too cold for harbourside development to be worthwhile, saying other cities around the world with similar or worse weather, including Glasgow and Cardiff, had successfully developed their waterfront areas.
He called on the council to work with the Otago Regional Council, property developers and other relevant groups to come up with an integrated approach to harbourside redevelopment.
Ms Harrex said Dunedin needed to follow in the footsteps of other New Zealand cities, including Tauranga, Auckland, Wellington and New Plymouth, which had redeveloped their waterfronts to the benefit of their residents and visitors.
