It is hoped the venerable City of Dunedin Pipe Band will ‘‘make a comeback'' after fielding no entries in the weekend's Otago-Southland regional pipe band contest.

Held in the Octagon, the event was blessed with lovely weather and enthusiastic crowds, Royal New Zealand Pipe Bands Association Otago Centre president Brian Coutts said.

The Dunedin band, formed in 1898, had no pipe major at present.

‘‘We expect them to make a comeback.

‘‘The tradition is still there, the uniforms are still there, the drums are still there - they'll come back,'' Mr Coutts said.

As far as he knew, it was the first time the city had not entered the regional contest. Eight teams competed; team numbers were also down because of a clash with the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo performance in Wellington.
