A man has been detained by Queenstown police after telling a bank teller he had an air gun in his bag.
Senior Sergeant Matt Scoles, of Dunedin, said the incident occurred at Westpac's Beach St branch about 11am.
A security guard restrained the man, believed to be in his early 20s, while police were called.
''At no stage were any threats made to the teller or information given to the teller that was sinister.''
But the man had been taken to the Queenstown police station for questioning as a result of ''behavioural issues''.
Sen Sgt Scoles said he did not know how many customers were in the bank at the time, but Victim Support had been advised and were available to assist staff or customers if necessary.
