The hospital had a long-standing relationship with the Otago hospice -and with other hospices throughout New Zealand and the world - Mercy Hospital acting chief executive Sister Mary Lucia said.
The sisters had a personal experience with the hospice's services recently when a sister, who was the financial co-ordinator for the area, spent a few weeks in the hospice.
"We all felt she was in the very best of hands," Sr Lucia said.
The hospice "made it easy for the sisters and for the family".
A bed which was specifically made for palliative care was purchased for the hospice by the charitable outreach programme.
The sister was able to use the bed when she was in the hospice.
Hospice chief executive Ginny Green said the purchase assisted with the replacement of older beds.
