In the hope of easing the challenge of funding, the Dunedin Casino Charitable Trust donated $12,000 to the Otago Community Hospice.

The trust, administered by Polson Higgs, decided to give one quarter of its money this funding round to the hospice because they were committed to supporting it and viewed it as an important community organisation, trustee Gillian Bremner said.

"Of all the applications [for funding], the hospice has probably got the biggest challenge," she said.

The hospice needed to raise $1 million annually for its operating costs and relied on community donations to do so.

It had been a fairly hard task to raise money this year, but the trust was impressed by the degree to which the community was willing to help the organisation, Mrs Bremner said.

"It's been a broader community concern in terms of the funding and viability of the hospice."

The hospice had received grants from the trust in the past but due to the important service it provided and the number of families it touched, the trust continued its support.
