Thousands of people jammed into Dunedin's Baldwin St to watch 75,000 Jaffas race down the world's steepest street yesterday.

Jaffas of three different colours hurtled down the street, reaching speeds of up to 100kmh, with the traditional red Jaffa rolling in the first race followed by yellow in the second and pink in the final race.

The colour of the Jaffas in the final race was a closely guarded secret until they were released.

The annual race, the biggest event on the Dunedin Cadbury Chocolate Carnival calendar, was a huge success on the final day of the carnival, Cadbury New Zealand sales director James Kane said.

''We're really happy.

''This is the third last of 62 events for the whole week, so everything has gone really well.

''We're happy to be able to raise money for these three fantastic charities,'' Mr Kane said.

The charities supported in this year's races were the Make a Wish Foundation, Surf Life Saving New Zealand and the Parent Centre New Zealand Inc.

It was the 14th time the event had been held since 2002 and the race had raised more than $700,000 for 15 different charities over the years.

Parent Centre New Zealand spokeswoman Claire McGowan said the race was the biggest fundraiser for the group and it was great to see so many people supporting it.

Last night's Larnach Castle Cadbury Winter Ball was the last event of this year's carnival. Race results: Race 1: 11451 (Auckland) 1, 05334 (Auckland) 2, 15466 (Auckland) 3, 04593 (Dunedin) 4, 01617 (Dunedin) 5.
