Ice 'believed to be factor' in SH1 courier van crash

A courier van crashed on State Highway 1 north of Hampden in icy conditions at 6.45am on Monday.

''Ice is believed to be a factor and the driver received minor injuries,'' Sergeant Craig Sew Hoy said.

''In light of that, and with the weather forecast, [I'd] just like to remind drivers to drive to the conditions. So keep the speed down ... especially on these icy mornings and if this cold [front] comes up in the next few days.''

Overall, motorists in the Oamaru area had been well-behaved this winter.

Sgt Sew Hoy also issued a reminder to drivers to clear their windscreens of ice before setting out in the morning.

''Scraping a wee hole to look through isn't good enough,'' he said.

Drivers operating vehicles with obscured windscreens could be issued with a $150 fine.

''If they have a crash, then it's likely they could face a dangerous driving charge, if they're found to be at fault because of it,'' he said.
