Rugby: South Otago HS win with strong second half

South Otago High School got their top six campaign off to the ideal start, beating Waitaki Boys' High School 29-10 to remain undefeated in the Southern Wide Real Estate 1st XV Competition.

In what South Otago coach Adam Whaanga described as a brutal game, South Otago found themselves trailing 10-5 at the break after playing into the wind during a half in which he said Waitaki Boys' played well.

The second half saw South Otago change tactics, looking to play territory with the wind at their back. It worked too, as Whaanga commented his team held around 90% of the territory, with Waitaki Boys' struggling to find away to get out of their own half.

Whaanga praised his forward pack, as it was through them that they scored four of their five tries through driving play in close. He said this was pleasing, particularly as in their first nine games it was in the backs that they were gaining an advantage.

In other matches King's High School and Otago Boys' High School 2nd XV scored 19 apiece to draw their game.

John McGlashan College were convincing 60-12 winners over Dunstan High School in the other top six game.

Mt. Aspiring College beat Taieri 26-7, while St Kevin's College beat the Otago Boys' High School 3rd XV 57-24. Kavanagh College beat West Otago 48-24 in the other match.
