Racing: Abandonment only choice

Forbury Park's transformation into a temporary lake on Wednesday left officials with no choice but to abandon last night's meeting at the southern Dunedin track.

Water across the track and in the stabling area made large parts of the complex unusable, let alone suitable for a race meeting.

Racing Integrity Unit stipendiary steward Chris Allison said it was clear when he and others arrived to inspect the raceway at 7.30am yesterday that there was no chance of a meeting going ahead.

''There's surface flooding on the track itself. We had some severe gouging of the track which will require a lot of remedial work to fix up and also there's flooding in the boxes in the stabling area,'' he said.

''It's just a nightmare down there so between those three things, it was a no-brainer.''

Allison said a group inspected the track on Wednesday night, and the early signs at that point weren't good.

''We actually did a quick check ... and we were probably aware that the chances of it going ahead were very slim,'' he said.

''However, we still wanted to give the opportunity just in case in did stop raining overnight.''

Forbury Park Trotting Club president Gerald Cayford said the club would discuss with Harness Racing New Zealand whether there was a chance of finding another date in the calendar on which to run the abandoned meeting.
