Deaths of two hunters 'devastating'

Police are investigating the death of a 21-year-old male shot and killed while hunting near Raetihi, the second hunting death of the weekend.

Ohakune police said the man was part of a three-person hunting group on farmland in Ruatiti, near Raetihi.

Police were called about 4.30pm yesterday after the man suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

At this stage police believe his firearm discharged while he has crossing a fence.

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident and this matter has been referred to the coroner.

A 16-year-old boy was shot while duck-hunting in Matata yesterday morning and died at the scene.

The teenager, a student at Trident High School, was with two other teenage boys when he was hit after a firearm discharged, police said.
