Football: Leader Caversham hard to beat

Another pressure-laden round of Football South Premier League matches promises more drama for ambitious coaches and players today.

Caversham's two-point lead at the top of the table will be under threat by Mosgiel at Tonga Park as the Plainsmen try to regain winning form.

But it will not be easy against coach Tim Horner's unbeaten Caversham side which exudes confidence, and has an effective mixture of scything attack and robust defending that will be hard to break down.

As well as near veterans such as keeper Daryl Putt, Craig Ferguson, and his diminutive partner, Rhys Henderson, the Tonga Park-based side has had spectators peering at team lists, deciphering new names such as No 14 Viljami Vuorenmaa, a talented Finn, and German No 18 Tore Waechter.

Maybe the Cavvy faithfull cannot pronounce their names, but they recognise the talent of Vuorenmaa who played for Finnish club Turun Palloseura as an all-round utility, while Waechter, a devoted fan of FC Schalke, is a creative midfield player.

Vuorenmaa scored last week in the 4-0 win over Roslyn, but such is the depth of Horner's squad, no-one is guaranteed a starting place, and even Tom Jackson watched from the bench last week.

Mosgiel's brilliant start flickered last week with a 2-2 draw against Green Island, and the locals at Sunnyvale would point out that the Island was 2-0 ahead at one stage.

Mosgiel boss Andrew Brook needs top matches from his key players.

New keeper Zane Green adds voice as well as stability to the defence, but that magic triangle of Eder Franchini and Morgan Day in central midfield, and the spearhead of striker Reagan Coldicott, will have to fire on all cylinders to compete.

At Sunnyvale, Green Island coach Malcolm Fleming is preparing another banana skin for the visit of Dunedin Technical, now back in third place but six points behind leader Caversham.

Coach Fleming has knitted a shrewd web of mobile young players who attack and defend as a pulsating unit, with the quicksilver Ben Kiore as the cutting edge, and Cam McPhail always where he is needed in defence, and a top gloveman in Josh Dijkstra.

However, Technical can muster height and power at both ends. Centrebacks Matt Joy and Andrew Douglas are keen to attack as well as defend, and there is a swarming mobile attack led by Taylor McCormack.

University plays Northern at the Caledonian Ground and, with just one competition point between both teams in 10 matches, neither side is having a vintage season.

Northern had the bye last week, but prior to that scored twice against Caversham in a 2-3 loss, which must have heartened the Magpie coaching staff of coach Murray Devereux, assistants Lewis Houghton and Jeff Satterthwaite, and manager Tony Galloway.

Students of distinction last week were goal-scorers Arnold Tapp and Matt Eldridge, but its all the way back to Easter to remember that three-goal Varsity deluge when captain Henry Flood and Truth Toheriri (2) hit the net.

Both teams can pass better than they can score at the moment, so coaches might go for a braver bolstering of attack, and unshackle the pace that exists in both sides.

All FPL kick-offs are 2.45 pm.

On Sunday, Roslyn-Wakari will play Neil Mackenzie's Milk Cup side at 1pm on Ellis Park, and both sides need match play to lift their form.

Roslyn has slid to third-bottom in the FPL and the Milk Cup lads are still tuning up.

Early morning gym sessions and technical coaching have their place, but game time out on the grass, during a properly refereed match is necessary to acquire a strong team shape for their overseas tournament in Northern Ireland during late July.

Coach Mackenzie said, ''Real Sociedad Manager David Moyes has entered a youth team in the Milk Cup, as has Malaga FC, and Liverpool manager Brendon Rodgers has again put in a Liverpool youth team, so the quality of opposition is escalating ...''

The Women's Knockout Cup starts at the Caledonian Ground tomorrow with University playing a Roslyn-Wakari side at 1pm while in Central Otago, Queenstown will host Dunedin Technical.
