South Otago High School
Winter sport at SOHS is all go. There are seven rugby teams entered, including two girls teams.
The first XV is looking at an exciting year in the new Otago secondary schools competition, with many players to watch.
The A netball team was delighted to be involved in the college netball schedule - the only school in Otago - and despite the loss to St Andrew's, was able to take a lot away from the experience.
Football is a growth sport at SOHS, with two teams each for boys and girls.
The boys are participating in the Dunedin Saturday club competition, and the senior girls are looking forward to their challenge of being in division one of the Thursday night competition.
Basketball is also on the rise, with two teams competing - the boys in Dunedin and the girls in Gore.
Two mixed hockey teams playing at the turf on Tuesdays are also training hard, ready for their season.
This term, there will also be two interschools (Taieri and Gore), cross-country and the swimming championships.
Queen's High School
Ella Hjertquist finished top qualifier at the New Zealand level eight rhythmic gymnastics trials in March and is looking forward to competing in the Australian championships in Melbourne in late May.
Shani Ayson has continued to make her mark in the surf.
The weekend before Easter, she won both the under-16 and under-18 women's events at the Southland surfing championships, then over Easter she won the South Island championships at St Clair for under-20 women. Shani also competed in the open women's grade, in which she was third.
Caitlin Orr has recently returned from Europe where she played for the Ice Ferns in division two, group A of the women's ice hockey world championships.
They played in Prague before heading to Scotland for the world event.
Ice hockey is growing at Queen's, with a full team ready for the interschool competition.
Two of the younger players, Amelia Hodgins and Erin Marshall, are developing skills with the Dunedin under-16 midgets.
At the Otago athletics awards evening, Christina Ashton won the summer junior athlete of the year award. Christina's record in the 100m hurdles was also acknowledged, along with the record set by the 4 x 400m relay team, of which she was a member.
Queen's had three teams in the futsal competition in term one.
The undefeated year 10 team won the girls division one grade.
Tokomairiro High School
Two records were broken at the school's athletics day.
Sam Fischli broke the senior boys shot put record, throwing 12.05m, and Sam Walker broke a record from 2002 for the junior boys 100m, running 12.13sec.
The Tokomairiro mixed touch team qualified for the South Island tournament in Christchurch.
The team performed well and learned a lot from playing quality opposition at the tournament, placing eighth.
On the penultimate day of term one, more than 70 pupils joined with East Otago High School pupils in their annual summer exchange at the Edgar Centre.
To buck the trend of several years, Tokomairiro won the exchange.
All pupils displayed great sportsmanship with games being played hard and fast in touch, basketball, netball and volleyball.
Blue Mountain College
Blue Mountain pupils Mickayla May, Jackson Beauchamp, Alexandra Burgess, Cheyanne Candy and Brea Sim all medalled at the southern districts multi-style martial arts karate championships held at Tapanui recently.
Brea Sim was also awarded the Megan Finlayson Trophy.
At the Otago cricket awards, year 10 pupil Georgia Thomson was presented with the outstanding performer plaque for her consistent contribution throughout the season.
Trophies were also presented to the victorious Otago Country under-15 and Otago secondary schools teams which included Georgia and fellow Blue Mountain College representatives Eden Jones, Tessa Kelly, Taylah Dawson-Tait and Holly Kelly.
Ben Rea has been selected in the Otago youth squad to participate in the Milk Cup in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, from July 27 to 31.
At the Otago-Southland athletics championships, Rachael Kummer threw 27.67m to win gold in the under-15 girls javelin.
Rachael was the sole pupil to attend the South Island championships in Nelson. She finished sixth with a throw of 24.31m.
Mount Aspiring College
The school held its annual swimming, athletics and mountain biking champs.
Swimming champions were Jaime Toepfer (13 years girls), Kobi Stevens (13 years boys), Samantha Garrick (under-16 girls), Gregor Findlay (under-16 boys), Ellie Russell (over-16 girls) and Noel Bisson (over-16 boys).
Noel broke school records in 50m freestyle, 25m butterfly and 100m freestyle, and Wilfred Spearing broke the under-16 50m freestyle record.
Athletics champions were Phoenix Brownlee (under-14 girls), Wesley Moore (under-14 boys), Laura MacCulloch (under-16 girls), Ned Williams-Holloway (under-16 boys), Holly Bailey (over-16 girls) and Teegan Vink (over-16 boys).
MAC age-group athletics records were broken by Matt Molloy (100m), Laura MacCulloch (200m, 400m), Courtney Leith (javelin), Ryan Schmack (shot, discus), Anika Fouchee (throw), Sammy Burke (800m), Janus Staufenberg (800m) and John Steven (800m).
More than 100 pupils competed in the MAC mountain biking championships.
Kavanagh College
The southern Catholic schools tournament was held in Oamaru on March 29-30.
Kavanagh was represented by 110 pupils as well as staff, coaches, managers and supporters.
The competition was against Verdon, St Peter's, St Kevin's and Roncalli colleges.
