Racing: Feather Boyz backs up win

Feather Boyz just keeps getting better and is becoming a pleasant surprise for trainer Eian Lamb.

The 5yr-old backed up a win on grass at Wingatui last month by winning the feature race at Forbury Park last night.

He got up to win the Letty Ferguson Memorial Trot over 2700m, despite starting off the 10m mark, and having to survive a false start..

He finished just in front of Armouri, resulting in a Dunedin quinella in the race.

Lamb said the surprise win at Wingatui last month gave him some confidence for last night.

''He has sharpened up really well since then and has been working really well. He was a 50-50 chance tonight,'' Lamb said.

''He is big and is a good-natured bugger. Just a really honest horse who tries hard. You can't fault that.''

Lamb is based at Tomahawk but Feather Boyz hates the water is trained elsewhere.

With four wins now in the bank. Lamb is not sure what is next for Feather Boyz. There may be a race in Winton next month or some more racing at Forbury Park in the winter.

It was a good win for owner Eric Dasler. Dasler was in a syndicate and, when it broke up, he gained some horses which eventually led to Feather Boyz.

• Dave Chalmers had a great birthday present last night.

Chalmers and his brother, Peter, from Dunedin, saw their 5yr-old gelding, Best of the Bunch, win the c2 mobile over 2200m.

It was heart-in-the-mouth stuff for the brothers watching their horse lead all the way to hold on from a fast-finishing bunch.

Peter Chalmers said Best of the Bunch was a horse who liked to run his own race and did what he wanted.

''He doesn't like a whip. Can't hit him. He just doesn't like it. But he's one who likes to get out in front and that was what he did when he won in Invercargill,'' Peter said.

Horse ownership is a new venture for the brothers and ownership of Best of the Bunch has come about through accountant Eric Parr.

''We came to it through Eric who has been involved in horses for a long while. We've leased him for a couple of years off Eric and had a bit of fun.''

Par bought him in a sale the day of the Christchurch earthquake on February 22, 2011.

The brothers will discuss the future of Best of the Bunch with trainer Geoff Knight but said there was plenty of winter racing coming up at Forbury Park in the next few months.

• Leonardo score his first win last night in the c0 mobile pace over 2200m.

After winning a workout at Invercargill last week, the David Heffernan 4yr-old went straight to the front straight and was never headed.

He skipped out to a four-length lead coming into the home straight for the final time.
